Richmond Business School
Environmentally friendly synthetic slate re-roof
Client: Richmond Business School
Happe Contracts secured the contract to provide a new roof covering for The Richmond Business School. The project was a total re-roof of the building, involving the removal of the existing slate roof covering and replacement with new Eternit ‘Rivendale’ synthetic slates.
Eternit is a fibre cement often used in roofing, building and construction materials, mainly because of its strength and durability. Rivendale slates offer the latest in outstanding aesthetics with a finely detailed textured surface and dressed edge. These slates are constructed from fibre cement and are the only product of its kind that can achieve an A+ (the lowest environmental impact) as defined in the BRE’s Green Guide to Specification.
Channel 4 Headquarters
Client: Channel 4
The existing roof covering to four stairwell roofs had started to fail. Due to the unusual design and many difficult penetrations it was decided to install a Tor Elastaseal system to provide a complete seamless waterproofing solution.
Cold Applied Liquid systems make working around roof plant and penetrations easy with minimal disruption.
Bauder Total Roof System installed over a large area bringing the entire roof up to modern thermal efficiency regulations
Client: Apollo/London Borough of Newham
Bauders Total Roof System incorporating FA-TE flatboard insulation was installed to over 1000sq.m of flat roofs with a 20-year guarantee issued on completion.
Bauder FA-TE is designed to be combined with Bauders DUO self-adhesive underlay to provide superior bond strength and the perfect base for the torch applied cap sheet.
Kay Rowe Nursery
Happe Contracts is pleased to announce the completion of another prestige roofing installation for the London Borough of Newham.
The contract was for the replacement of the existing failed roof covering at Kay Rowe Nursery, Forest Gate. Happe Contracts installed over 600sq.m. of Radmat Eshaflex high performance felt roofing system, incorporating a tapered insulation scheme to improve drainage. The contract also included the installation of new triple-skinned rooflights throughout.
Radmat Eshaflex achieves Green Guide to Specification A+ ratings, and BBA Certified, environmental credibility. Ease of installation is supported by Radmat’s patented ‘groove technology’ which typically reduces gas consumption by 25% (45 grams per m2), reduces CO2 production by 168 g/m2 and reduces installation times by up to 30%.
The contract was completed on time and on budget and a 20-year guarantee was issued to the client at handover.
Kent Terrace London
Client: Rattigan Associates
As part of a refurbishment project at one of London’s historic Nash Terrace houses, Delta Ecofin TPO membrane was specified to provide the waterproofing solution.
TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a form is single ply roofing membrane which can be fixed with either bonding adhesive or via mechanical fixing methods. Seams between the individual pieces of membrane are hot air welded together to create a strong watertight joint. TPO membranes are naturally UV reflective which can help keep buildings cool during the summer months.
Client: Ware Museum
When the roof of Ware’s historic museum started to fail, IKO Permaphalt polymer modified asphalt was chosen as the waterproofing solution. As an approved contractor, Happe Contracts provided the installation and issued a 20-year guarantee on completion.
IKO’s Permaphalt is a specially formulated mastic asphalt solution which provides long term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation. Mastic asphalt waterproofing is completely seamless, provides high levels of fire resistance and is suitable for almost all roof types including inverted roofs and, thanks to it’s resistance to foot traffic and root penetration, intensive and extensive green roof systems.
Insulated Liquid Applied Waterproofing Solution
Client: London Borough of Brent
The existing felt roof covering had failed and was leaking in several places. In order to bring the roof up to modern thermal efficiency regulations, the roof was insulated and the waterproofing solution of choice was a Tor Elastaseal system, along with the replacement of over 25 triple skinned polycarbonate domed rooflights. The Cold Applied Liquid Roofing solution allowed the selection of plant on the roof to be worked around quickly and easily with minimal time taken to complete waterproofing details. A 25-year guarantee was issued on completion.
Happe Contracts is pleased to announce the completion of its most recent contract, a new Green Roof for a residential block on Belmont Street, London Borough of Camden.
The contract was to remove the existing roof covering and structural decking, and replace it with a Bauder XF118 Wild Flower Blanket. Ostensibly this might seem to be a straightforward task, but before the green covering could be laid there needed to be extensive preparatory work undertaken.
Preparations started with reinforcing and upgrading the existing roof joists and decking to accommodate the increased loadings. Once the reinforcing work was complete, the second stage was to install a Bauder Total Roof System, a patented system incorporating a variety of membranes designed to provide robust waterproofing coupled with a high degree of thermal efficiency. Having been in use in the UK for around 30 years, the Bauder Total Roof System is a tried and tested flat roofing solution, which utilises tough SBS modified bitumen membranes of the highest quality.
With the integrity of the roof assured, the Bauder Wild Flower Blanket was then overlaid to complete the installation. Similar in concept to lawn turf, the Bauder Wildflower Blanket offers an instant covering of vegetation. The product is lightweight and comprises a carefully selected mix of 24 species of native wildflowers, herbs, sedums and grasses for a diverse community of vibrant foliage and flowers. The plants satisfy the requirements of the BREEAM and Sustainable Homes codes, and also feature a range of native species that meet with most biodiversity plans that project-specific ecology reports are now demanding.
To quote Bauder: “The key benefit of using the XF118 Wildflower Blanket is its swift establishment of a dense, vigorous and seasonally colourful vegetated sward across the roof, that will quickly attract a broad range of aphids and invertebrates which in turn will encourage the development of a sustainable ecology on the roof. The unique blanket carrier incorporates a polypropylene mesh stitched to a geotextile membrane which ensures the plants can quickly establish in to the substrate installed beneath.”
Paul Happe said of the project: “This contract was particularly time-critical, with only eight weeks scheduled for the entire installation, and I am delighted that my team’s efforts brought the project to a successful conclusion, on time and on budget. The final effect is most impressive and reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved.”
